Where is Target when you need one?

We are officially in our new place and loving it! However, shopping for household items in Germany has been ridiculously frustrating. Especially without a car. We have loaner furniture for 90 days that will have to do until we find furniture we love. We were so excited for Ikea in Germany and it sucked! We couldnt buy a bed because Germany has different bed sizes. No Twin, Full, Queen, or Kings. They have Single, Double, King, Super King. We wanted to buy nice furniture to have when we ship our stuff home in a few years, and american sheets wont fit these. The selection at this Ikea was so minimal compared to the ones back home. Nuts right? We finally got curtains last night at H&M Home so people wont be able to watch our every move anymore.
Sunday I locked us out of the apartment for the first and last time. Im surprised I didnt have to sleep on the couch after that one.

Goodbye hotel!

We went to our first Euro Club Saturday. SO weird. It was called Cocoon and the dancers were butterflies and cocoons. Its all house and techno music and it was packed but the only people dancing were older people. So disappointing.

Look who we found at Saturn (like Best Buy) Dobby!

I really wanted to buy him, but 2000euro was a bit much.

And this guy from Lord of the Rings

Yesterday we took a break from the stress of horrible luck with house shopping and went to Frankfurt Zoo, which Ill post pictures of tomorrow :)

  1. I feel ya on the unfamiliarity factor. While I'd love to see Europe, I'm so glad our OCONUS is Alaska. I hope you find what you need soon! Oh, and we totally don't have Ikea here. 1 point for Germany!

  2. Are you in Frankfurt? I ask because I've been to Cocoon here and I also think it's really weird! I only go when there's a special DJ playing that my friend likes (She usually decides where we go when we go out and I just follow and dance!)
I am glad you're settling in to Germany, although I admit shopping for home goods SUCKS without Target! We get ours from the local REWE (super market) and from places like Karstadt and IKEA.

Where are you guys located now?

  3. I love Saturn. And I have the BIGGEST desire to come to your H&M now...our's doesn't have anything to do with household items, period. Only clothes. Not sure if you already know of it, or if you're even up for it, but there should be a Bookoo site in your area. It's a place where military, dependents, local civilians, etc. have a virtual "yard sale" to get rid of their stuff. If you don't mind used/thrifted, and have the time to spend on browsing, then it could be perfect for finding some decor or furnishings. Usually, the web address will be the name of your base + yardsales.com. So for me, www.ramsteinyardsales.com, or there's one for Heidelberg, or...pretty much anywhere. Maybe it could help?

Good luck finding furnishings. I'm sure you'll discover something fabulous!

  7. Your place is so cute! So glad you are loving it :) It's so crazy that the Ikea there sucks, because the one here is great (other than the crazy people everywhere.. lol). Does base not have a furniture section? We're currently looking for furniture for our next house and we bought the majority of the stuff from Ikea but we're also considering a bedroom suit from base. It's very weird that Germany has different bed sizes! I would get so confused...

As for the club... the ones here are pretty weird too! We have found that the later you go, the younger the crowd is. If we go at midnight or earlier, it's literally old people doing disco... but if we go at 1 or 2 AM then it's younger people and better music because they stay open til 6AM or later! So crazy. Of course I haven't been doing any clubbing lately.... hahaha ;)

  8. Yay for a new place and no more hotel living!! Have you guys checked out the furniture store on the Mainz-Kastel part of base? They've got a pretty good selection of American furniture. And if you're looking for cheap home decor goods, there are a few cute places downtown that I love: In Luisenforum there's a place called Nanu-Nana....and right around the bus stop there's a place called Depot. Go check those out! Have fun setting up your home! :)

  9. I hated HATED the first couple months in Hawaii before they had a Target, it was awful. Im sorry to hear the Ikea there was rather lacking for say. Have you guys tried the furniture store on post / or do they have one. Don't give up or get frustrated you will find the perfect pieces you are looking for and you will be able to turn your house in to a home in no time!!!

  12. That dancer at the club looked pretty serious.

Oh furniture shopping... I used to work at a furniture store. I think that furniture shopping sucks hardcore no matter where you live. The selection never seems to have just what you were looking for :(. Good luck though in figuring out how to reconcile American sizes with German sizes, if you need help I can send you the dimensions of American beds!

  13. So glad you like your new home.
I know the beds have different names but isn't the size similar so that the sheets would fit?
